Phi Beta Sigma and Kappa Alpha Theta win first stroll competition
All four Greek councils collaborated in McCormick Auditorium Thursday for Greek Week’s first stroll competition.
Strolling traditions are specific to historically black Greek organizations in the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC Inc.) and can be traced back to their African culture. Each organization has unique styles of strolling, incorporating signs and calls in their routines.
“I think the stroll competition is not only a great opportunity for all four councils to work together, but also to learn about the history of how organizations were founded and why strolling is important to [them],” said Daniel Miller, the assistant director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Phi Beta Sigma of NPC and Kappa Alpha Theta of the Panhellenic Association (PHA) won the competition, strolling to “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz.
“It’s a great way to build a connection with everyone, and a way to focus on the tradition of one council and sharing it with the other three councils,” said Weinberg senior Kate Butler, PHA president.
