NU in 60 Seconds: April 18
By

While you brood over the important events that have happened on this day, April 18 — in 1804 Napoleon Bonaparte was proclaimed the emperor of France, while in 1949 Eire formally withdrew from the British Commonwealth to become the Republic of Ireland — you might want to know that in the more recent past (yesterday, that is) you missed the first of the lecture series on Lebanon, organized by the Northwestern Model Arab League. But stay tuned for “The Rise of Hezbollah” on Monday, April 21.

If you also missed the advice session from CSI’s “Katherine” (Marg Helgenberger, an NU alum) and writer/director Richard Lewis? Don’t you worry, the Chicago Tribune has the handy tips for you. And if the world of Chicago Tribune is too provincial, read Medill instructor Karen Springen in Newsweek. It’s all about mommies and kids this time, or how a new picture book about plastic surgery aims to explain why Mom is getting prettier.

Take it easy, there’s still time to apply for the Dance Marathon 2009 Exec Board today. It only takes a click… to get started. The deadline is Wednesday, April 23.

If you missed the OpenShutter photo exhibition organized by the Global Engagement Summit ‘08 yesterday, there is another photo event on Saturday — and this time it’s award-winning. Apparently, the winners of the 2008 Polish College Student Photography Contest will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on 984 N. Milwaukee Ave. at 6 p.m. The Library also offers plenty of online exhibits such as the mini-exhibit of African Fashion.
