Northwestern police investigate Rock incident

The Northwestern University Police Department said Monday that it is investigating the blackface endorsement that covered the Rock from Saturday night to Sunday night, before it was re-painted by the Residential College Board.

Police officers are currently interviewing witnesses to learn more about the Rock incident, Officer James Richards said.

Officers confirmed that there is no security camera near the Rock, just the “Rock Wildcam” installed by University Relations and an emergency call box.

“We need to look at how the space is being used,” said Officer Alex Stein, who is in charge of surveillance on campus. “We conduct crime analysis.”

Stein and Richards both said that one incident at the Rock would not necessarily warrant the installation of a security camera in the area. University officers began installing security cameras on campus in 2006, Stein said.
