Nia Coffey selected fifth overall in WNBA draft

On Thursday night, former Wildcat star Nia Coffey became the first Northwestern women's basketball player to be taken in the first round of the WNBA draft when the San Antonio Stars took her fifth overall.

Coffey, who was All-Big Ten first team all four of her years here, was the first Northwestern player to have 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Her senior year, Coffey averaged 20 points and 10.4 rebounds.

Coffey's name is littered throughout Northwestern record books. She is the all-time leading rebounder with 1,183 rebounds and is the second all-time leading scorer (2,287 points) and shot blocker (229 blocks). Joining Amy Jaeschke ('11), Coffey is just the second Wildcat to ever be selected in the WNBA draft.

The Stars had both the first and fifth pick in this year's draft, so Coffey will join first overall pick Washington Kelsey Plum, college basketball's all-time leading scorer.
