Renowned economist speaks at Northwestern
William Easterly, an NYU professor and economist, spoke at an event on Thursday at Harris Hall titled, “The Tyranny of Experts: Economists, Dictators, and the Forgotten Rights of the Poor.” The Buffet Center along with One Book One Northwestern, The Program of African Studies, Global Engagement Summit and NUCHR co-sponsored the talk, which focused on his critiques of foreign aid.
On the lookout for the new Dean of Weinberg
The University has chosen a search committee for the succeeding dean of Weinberg. The next dean will be replacing Dean Sarah Mangelsdorf, who will be at University of Wisconsin-Madison next year as provost. English professor Wendy Wall will chair the committee consisting of students, faculty, staff and members of the WCAS Board of Visitors. The national search for the subsequent dean will begin in the fall.
University hosts outdoor recitation of the Iliad
Students and faculty participated in a marathon reading of about eight hours of the ancient Greek epic poem, The Iliad. The Iliad by Moonlight took place outdoors on the Lakefill from 10 p.m. on Friday until dawn on Saturday. Event organizer Francesca Tataranni worked with her students to edit the Iliad to be recited in a shorter time period and hoped to recreate the oral tradition of ancient Greek poetry.
ASL presents Silent Night
The American Sign Language Club hosted their first Annual Silent Night on Saturday to celebrate Deaf culture and history. The night began with an introduction to sign language followed by the guest speaker Karen Putz, founder of Illinois Hands & Voices and the director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infusion.
