Northwestern, Evanston brace for the cold
With Monday’s wind chill expected to fall into the -40s, the University has cancelled classes and all nonessential activities on the Evanston and Chicago Campuses. Norris Center and all exercise facilities will close and all shuttle routes will be canceled, save the Evanston and Campus Loops. A full list of closures and changes can be found on the University website. A decision regarding Tuesday classes will be made Monday.
The City of Evanston announced it will keep buildings open Monday with minimal staffing. Parking in downtown garages will be free until Tuesday night to keep cars off of the streets to assist snow removal efforts. The Rebecca Crown Center will remain open overnight Sunday as a warming shelter.
The CTA announced Sunday via Twitter that Red and Purple Line trains are experiencing delays due to the weather.
Davis St. building demolition underway, Fire Chief reports no sign of foul play
Demolition is underway for the building destroyed by fire on Dec. 30 which housed Pine Yard, Taco Diablo and TechniColour Nail & Day Spa. Evanston Fire Chief Thomas Janetske said the fire was likely caused by a mechanical or electrical problem.
Taco Diablo owners Daniel Kelch and Laura Van Dorf announced on the restaurant’s Facebook page that they intend to rebuild and reopen the restaurant.
McCormick Professor wins National Science Foundation award
Giuseppe Buscarnera, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, has received a Faculty Early Career Development Award, NSF’s highest award for young faculty members. Buscarnera will receive a minimum of $400,000 over five years.
