With winter just around the corner in sunny Evanston, it's time to take out those snow boots. Luckily for guys, there are many options to choose from, each with distinct style and personality.
I admit I was surprised when I learned how distinctly a guy’s boots could define perceptions of his personality. In high school I was chastised for my purchase of what I thought was a simple, cost-efficient pair of Timberland boots, as my friends told me that I was much more the "L.L.Bean" type.
Regardless of what boot fits your style, here are some general descriptions of popular guy's winter boots.
Timberlands:
These are probably the most versatile of men’s boots. You can find anyone from construction workers and lumberjacks to collegiate young men wearing them. The ubiquitous tan shoes are perfect for just about any winter ensemble, and are best for guys who don't give much of a shit about how they look during the winter (which, let's be honest, is just about everyone). They’re extremely durable and work for just about any outdoor occasion.
The Men’s 6-Inch Premium Waterproof Boot is $180.
Red Wing:
Red Wing boots are an American Heritage brand. They're suitable for guys who want to mix fashion-forwardness with Americana, so if that floats your boat, you should check them out. They're perfect for the fashion-conscious guy who isn't trying to be too in-your-face about it.
Red Wing boots come in multiple styles, with prices generally ranging from about $200 to $300.
L.L.Bean:
If you want to look classy but aren't trying to be particularly hip or trendy, L.L.Bean boots are for you. Like Tims, they're pretty popular, and you definitely won't find yourself making a huge fashion statement with them. At the same time, they come in a few different varieties, so you can mix and match. They’re also fully waterproof and some even have insulation for extra warmth.
The Men’s 8-inch Thinsulate Boot is $119.00.
UGGs:
Despite common belief, UGGs aren't only for the ladies. With a range of different styles that err on the trendy side, these boots are for dudes who aren't content with wearing sweats. If you're trying to dress up for any occasion, even that 9:00 a.m. class, then maybe UGGs are for you. If you can rock them, then all the more power to you.
Prices for Men’s UGG boots hover around $250.
