Men's soccer team pulls out a draw against No. 10 Michigan State

The ‘Cats seem to have re-discovered their propensity to tie. The men’s soccer team came away with another one on the road against No. 10 Michigan State today, knotting up with the Spartans 1-1 even after double overtime. With the tie, the No. 25 Wildcats move to 7-2-5 (2-1-3 in the B1G) and the Spartans move to 9-3-3 (3-1-2 in the B1G). It was NU’s first tie since September 28 at Indiana; the team has now gone 3-1-1 since then.

MSU got on the board first with a penalty kick by junior defender Zach Carroll in the 60th minute, following a yellow card on Northwestern senior defender Nikko Boxall. The ‘Cats answered quickly, however, with sophomore forward Mike Roberge scoring the equalizer in the 64th minute, with an assist from junior midfielder Cole Missimo and a favorable deflection off a defender towards Roberge.

Both goalkeepers had relatively quiet afternoons, both tallying only three saves. Michigan State grabbed the edge in terms of shot attempts (17-10), but the vast majority of both teams’ shots were off the mark.

The ‘Cats will look to rebound in non-conference play on Wednesday just a few minutes down the road at Loyola. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
