Medill's Ted Spiegel dies, 82

    Ted Spiegel, associate professor emeritus-in-service for Medill, died Saturday, May 11 at the age of 82.

    Spiegel joined Medill as a full time faculty member in 1987. He is namesake and founder of the Medill IMC Spiegel Digital and Database Research Initiative, a research initiative that improves marketing effectiveness.

    Spiegel played an essential role in creating Medill’s IMC curriculum and built the fourth-quarter residency, commonly known as the immersion quarter, for IMC students. An innovator, he broke new ground with the development of the graduate direct marketing program. 

    He founded Spiegel Marketing in 1987. Those who worked with Spiegel remember him for always challenging students to adopt the newest technology, and for his expertise in business strategy and catalog marketing. 

    Spiegel is survived by his wife, Audrey. 

    A memorial service for Spiegel will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road.
