Feinberg professor Piotr Kulesza died early Sunday morning after falling from a balcony at a Hollywood, Fla., resort.
Kulesza fell from the 23rd floor balcony at approximately 12:39 a.m. Sunday in the Westin Diplomat Resort, according to Hollywood Police Lt. Osvaldo Perez. An investigation into the nature of the fall is underway. Perez said that there is no suspected foul play. Officials at the Broward County medical examiner's office said cause of death has not been determined, and an investigation could take several weeks.
Kulesza, an assistant professor of pathology, was attending a conference at a hotel in Hollywood, according to a statement from William A. Muller, Magerstadt professor and Pathology Department chairman at Feinberg.
“Peter was a remarkable colleague, who will be remembered for his infectious enthusiasm and energy,” Muller said in the statement. “He was dedicated to our academic mission, and this was evident in his interactions with colleagues, residents, fellows, and medical students.”
In addition to his teaching duties, Kulesza, 46, served as the director of Pathology Core Facility of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and was also the director of an oncology lab. He joined the faculty in 2009.
Muller said a memorial service will be held in the near future.
