Feinberg professor dies in Metra crash

The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identity of Feinberg assistant professor Victor Tsirline, who died Saturday afternoon when he was struck by an oncoming Metra train.

Lake Forest police responded to a report Saturday that a driver had driven his car across the Metra tracks at Old Mill Road after the warning lights and barrier came down. Paramedics immediately pronounced Tsirline dead, and the police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Tsirline, 35, was an assistant professor of endocrine and gastrointestinal surgery, as well as a surgeon at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.

“Dr. Tsirline was a talented young surgeon who contributed greatly to our team with his minimally invasive surgical expertise,” read a statement on the hospital’s website. “This is a tremendous loss for our organization.”

“We extend our condolences to his family and colleagues in Feinberg,” said Al Cubbage, Vice President of University Relations. “It seems to have been a tragic accident.”

The Chicago Tribune first reported the story.
