Starting classes again in the fall often means finding the perfect fall fashions to wear on the first day. In order to look their best, it’s not uncommon to plan out favorite outfits, even nights in advance. These five Northwestern students share the inspiration behind their back to school style:
Jodie Taylor
School and Year: Communication junior
Major(s)/Minor(s): Communication Studies and Urban Studies major
Hometown: Boston, Mass.
1) Where did you get your outfit?
My shoes are from DSW, my pants are from Urban [Outfitters], the earrings are from this shop in Boston on Newberry Street, and my bag is from Aldo.
2) What inspires your style?
My mom. She buys a lot of my clothes and we go shopping together. I like to wear things that I am comfortable in, especially going to class all day and walking around. So I’m not one to wear heels to class or anything. Just comfortable and cute.
3) Why did you choose this outfit for the first day?
I chose this because I kind of woke up late and I have worn this before and I knew it looked good.
4) What is your favorite accessory that you can’t live without?
Earrings. I think earrings can totally make an outfit. They just frame your face really nicely and make you look good.
Kira Hooks
School and Year: Communication/Weinberg junior
Major(s)/Minor(s): Film and Art History
Hometown: Atlanta, G.A.
1) Where did you get your outfit?
My shoes are from Clarks, my jeans are from T.J.Maxx, my shirt is from Urban Outfitters, and my purse is from Nordstrom, it’s Marc Jacobs. Oh, and my scarf is from H&M.
2) What inspires your style?
Actually, other people. I look at what other people are wearing. And how fashion trends translate from the runway to the real world. I look at a lot of street fashion blogs. Also, I love men’s fashion.
3) Why did you choose this outfit for the first day?
Well, I like things that reflect my mood. This shirt is really bright. I don’t know, I’m also a very weatherly person, and so I didn’t know what the weather was going to be like today, so I didn’t know if I needed a sweater, so I went with a long shirt, and it’s bright and perfect for fall.
4) What is your favorite accessory that you can’t live without?
Right now I guess my scarves. It’s a nice fall accessory.
Parul Kapoor
School and Year: Weinberg sophomore
Major(s)/Minor(s): Biology
Hometown: St. Cloud, Minn.
1) Where did you get your outfit?
My Toms are from the Toms website, my shorts are from Old Navy, my tank top is from Gap, and my sweater is also from Old Navy.
2) What inspires your style?
I decided to wear shorts because it’s actually very nice out today, and I liked how it looked and I only have one class today. I just decided to put on what looked nice I guess.
3) Why did you choose this outfit for the first day?
I don’t know if I have an inspiration. I just kind of hit up the clearance racks at Old Navy, Gap. I also sometimes go to Urban Outfitters, too. I like stuff that is solid colored, and then I will wear a couple of different colors.
4) What is your favorite accessory that you can’t live without?
A headband usually, because they are cute and my bangs and my hair are all over the place.
Andrea Kang
School and Year: Weinberg sophomore

1) Where did you get your outfit?
The dress is from H&M, my shoes are Steve Madden, and the shirt is like an old shirt I stole from my mom (Ralph Lauren). I have a lot of things taken from my mom.
2) What inspires your style?
I like simple streamlined things. I generally try to go for simple silhouettes that are comfy but with good colors. Like, I’m obsessed with pastels.
3) Why did you choose this outfit for the first day?
Just because it is warm and I wanted to take advantage of the decent weather. And this is one of my favorite dresses, and I usually wear it with this top because I like the color combo. And it’s a good cover up.
4) What is your favorite accessory that you can’t live without?
I usually wear a watch. I don’t have it on today, so I’m a hypocrite. I usually wear it, it’s functional and comfortable to wear, obviously helpful, goes with everything and I think it’s a classy accessory.
Grace Kapov
School and Year: Weinberg freshman

1) Where did you get your outfit?
My shirt is from J. Crew, my belt is from American Eagle, my skirt is from Aritzia in Northbrook Court, my necklace is from Francesca’s, and my sandals are also from J. Crew.
2) What inspires your style?
That is a good question. I guess this is my boating outfit. If I were to go on a boat, this is what I would wear. I don’t know, I just put random things together.
3) Why did you choose this outfit for the first day?
I enjoy wearing comfortable skirts, and I felt like the longer sleeves were good for the weather.
4) What is your favorite accessory that you can’t live without?
I love scarves. I always do things with scarves, because they help keep my neck warm when it’s cold outside, and they add more spunk to any outfit.
