ASG Faculty Honor Roll expands scope
By

The Associated Student Government released the 2010 Faculty Honor Roll Monday night. The list included 100 faculty members from 60 departments, an increase from last year’s list of 70 faculty members. The size of the department was taken into account when determining the number of faculty named for each department.

About 1,500 students, more than twice as many as last year, voted for their favorite faculty members on the same ballot as the campus-wide ASG elections on April 14, a first for the organization.

The release of the honor roll was delayed, as the process proved more time consuming than anticipated. However, ASG Academic Vice President Gabby Daniels explained in an email that in the future, all of the professors’ names will be listed in a drop down menu on the ballot, instead of a fill-in box.

“Firstly, that will make all of our lives easier, and two, people will be more inclined to vote, since they won’t have to remember spelling or other things that will hinder them from voting,” Daniels wrote.

The honor roll is an important achievement for faculty, as it is a factor in receiving tenure. Daniels added that the honor roll is a way for students to show appreciation for the faculty.

“It is important that the faculty get recognized in this fashion because it shows them that we care,” she wrote. “But even further, it is important for us as students to respond because we not only should show our appreciation to professors that we revere, but we also have a say in tenure when we do so.”
