A&O knows you love watching Saturday Night Live clips the morning after the show – now, you can watch the comedy happen live when SNL’s Michael Che and Julio Torres perform at NU.
SNL “Weekend Update” anchor Michael Che, also a writer for the show, will headline A&O Productions’ second spring stand-up event, this time with Northwestern Sketch Television, on May 24 at Tech auditorium. A writer for the show, Julio Torres, will open. Student comedian Nabeel Muscatwalla, a Communication junior, will also perform, and NSTV will show some of the group’s sketches.
Che joined SNL in 2013, and replaced Cecily Strong on “Weekend Update” in 2014 to become the segment’s first Black anchor. His noted impersonations in sketches include news anchor Lester Holt and rapper Meek Mill. He has also been a correspondent for Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, known for his coverage of issues such as the Ferguson protests. As for stand-up, Che has performed on the Late Show with David Letterman, and later became the first comedian to perform stand-up on Late Night with Seth Meyers. He released a half-hour stand-up special through Comedy Central, and recently dropped Michael Che Matters, an hourlong special, on Netflix.
Opening for Che, Torres has become a lauded SNL writer since joining the show in late 2016. Some of his most popular sketches include the political satire “Melania’s Moments” and the fake ad “Wells for Boys,” which New York magazine called “maybe the best sketch of the season.” He has also worked on The Chris Gethard Show (hey, he was just here) and Billy on the Street (hey, he went to NU).
Tickets will be available on the Norris Box Office website today at 5 p.m. for $5.
Che, Torres and Muscatwalla will perform at Tech auditorium on May 24 at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and Wildcards will be checked at the door.
