Broad City stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson will speak Thursday as A&O and Hillel's Fall Speaker. The two actresses will partake in a moderated Q&A with RTVF professor Catherine S. Carrigan at 7 p.m. in Cahn Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased for $5 on the Norris Box Office.
Often described as a "female Workaholics," the show that came out of Jacobson and Glazer's web series is much more than that. Raunchy, unapologetic and downright hilarious, the show catalogues the lives of fictionalized versions of Glazer and Jacobson in their trials and tribulations as young women in New York City. At the event, the women will speak about the influence that Judaism has had on their work and friendship.
Broad City's message of two twenty-somethings bumbling through life should hit home for a Northwestern audience.
"Their show is about two people who are young and just learning as they go," said Communication senior Eytan Boclin, A&O Speakers Chair. "It's kind of like that strong friendship that we can all identify with and love to see on screen and in them and in ourselves. They do truly unique and hilarious work that people our age vibe with and connect with."
The show's popularity speaks for itself – Comedy Central renewed it for a third season before the second one had even aired this January.
Hillel and A&O have been collaborating to make this show happen since last spring, according to Boclin. Hillel is excited to bring two successful women who are "awesome role models for the Jewish Community," said Weinberg senior Mitchell Caminer, Hillel Co-President. Both Hillel and A&O are excited to continue a partnership that has brought the artists like James Franco to campus.
"From a Hillel perspective, it's nice to have a partner that's really on the top of their game," Caminer said. "This is the best of the best at Northwestern."
Students will have an opportunity to get their questions answered by the best of the best through a Google Form A&O will release. Carrigan will read selected questions to Jacobson and Glazer and give recognition to the students who asked the questions. According to Caminer, the RTVF professor, who works closely with the Northwestern University Women Filmmaker's Alliance, has been "studying up ... she's going to be on her A game on Thursday."
This show promises to be satisfying for any and all fans of comedy. "Comedians make for the best shows we’ve had, this is no exception" said Caminer. "In addition to what they do in the real world on their show on Comedy Central, I think they’re going to put on a really great show."
Glazer and Jacobson's broad (pun totally intended) humor will doubtlessly satisfy even the most obscure taste in comedy. As Caminer put it briefly, "we're pumped." Start hoarding your Bed, Bath, and Beyond coupons now.
