The Gamma Chi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. painted the Rock today in celebration of their 100th-year anniversary. From the chapter Web site:
“In 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, along with fifteen other young ladies founded Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, making it the oldest international Greek-letter Organization established in America by and for Black women. Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated in 1913 and has grown from one undergraduate group of 16 members to an international organization. The sorority was founded to be an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates.”
