As the quarter races along, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with work and hole up in your cell of a dorm room. One solution? Go see the For Members Only spring concert, a night filled with both DJ-ing and live performances.
FMO, Northwestern’s Black Student Alliance, decided to do things a little differently for their third annual concert. While past shows have featured R&B, this year’s show will focus on hip-hop, said Brittany Jones, one of the incoming publicity chairs.
“Hip-hop appeals to more people,” Jones explains.
The concert will feature The Cool Kids, Chip Tha Ripper and Fly.Union, with Northwestern performer Rotimi as the opening act. Because, “a bunch of people on the program committee are DJs,” there will be DJ sets in between each act, Jones says.
Older students may be familiar with The Cool Kids, as they played at Dillo Day 2008. For freshmen and sophomores not familiar with the group, they’re a Chicago-based duo that plays alternative hip-hop. You’ve probably heard a Cool Kids song or two. They have songs featured in video games and commercials, and the music video for “Delivery Man” aired on MTV2.
The show also promises to bring black students from other Chicago colleges to Evanston. According to Jones, the program committee “got a hold of other black student alliances in the city and [invited] them…in fact the advertising that we have, the president of Columbia [College]’s black student alliance designed them for us.”
The concert is Sunday, April 25 in the Louis Room, and doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are currently available through the Norris box office. FMO is expecting the tickets to sell out, but students can come the night of and buy at the door. Tickets are $5 both through the box office and at the door.
